Shock Wave Therapy

Shock Wave Therapy uses intense very short energy waves to treat chronic painful conditions of the musculoskeletal system.  It can be used in the treatment of chronic or acute conditions.  It is a non invasive therapy which aids the healing process by having a pro inflammatory mechanism to influence the underlying tissues, to speed up the healing process.

Shock Wave Therapy is used to treat a number of conditions, the most commonly seen are:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Achilles Tendonopathy
  • Calcific Tendinitis or Tendinosis
  • Connective tissue pain or degeneration
  • Muscle and Joint pain and injuries
  • Morton’s Neuromas
  • Trigger Points
  • Calcific Tendonitis on Shoulder
  • Tennis Elbow or Golfer’s Elbow
  • Bursitis (ie.: Trochanteric Bursitis)
  • Piriformis Syndrome
  • Tendinopathies (ie.: Runner’s Knee)
  • Osgood Schlatter
  • Shin Splints

Most conditions need an average of three treatments.  However, some conditions take less and some take more, especially if a large area is involved.  We can tailor price plans if necessary.

Shock Wave Therapy is one of the safest treatments out there.  However, if any of the following apply to you then it may not be an appropriate treatment and we will discuss this at your consultation:

  • malignancies (cancer) in the treatment area
  • metal implants in the treatment area
  • breast implants or pacemakers
  • pregnancy
  • blood clotting disorder (including thrombosis and haemophilia)
  • received a steroid injection within 6 weeks
  • infection or skin abrasion in the treatment area

There are some minor side effects that you may experience when being treated with Shock Wave Therapy:

  • redness can appear almost immediately after therapy in the treated area, as blood flow increases
  • you may experience pain in the treated area, (speak to your therapist before taking pain relief)
  • there may be swelling in the treated area
  • you may notice petechia (red spots) in the treated area
  • you may notice bruising in the treated area
